     Lydia Smith was born on 26 March 1833 at Bingham, Somerset, Maine.2,3 She was the daughter of Benjamin Smith and Hannah Maryfield.2 She married George B. Cilley, son of Joseph D. Cilley and Nancy Maloon, on 9 May 1855.4,2 She died on 26 April 1920 at Nottingham, Rockingham, New Hampshire, at age 87.2,3 She was buried on 28 April 1920 at George B. Cilley Cemetery, Nottingham, Rockingham, New Hampshire.2,3

     It is thought that Lydia was part Indian. She was very strong. Jake (Herbert Jacob) used to tell of her lifting a 100 pound barrel of flour off the tail-board of a wagon and then carrying it into the house. Another memory that Jake often repeated was a spanking she gave him using the flat of a hand-saw upon his nether portions.1
