John Cilley was born on 15 October 1822 at Rockingham, New Hampshire.1,2 He was the son of Abraham B. Cilley and Rebecca Dow.1 He married Martha L. Brown, daughter of Jonathan Elliott Brown, on 14 October 1847.1 He died on 3 April 1890 at age 67.3,2 He was buried in 1890 at Harvey Lake Cemetery, Northwood, Rockingham, New Hampshire.3,2
John Cilley and Martha L. Brown appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Northwood, Rockingham, New Hampshire, enumerated 11 September 1850, John, 27, was a shoemaker and had real estate valued at $575. Martha was 21. Their son Henry was 1 month old. All were born in New Hampshire.4
John Cilley and Martha L. Brown appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Northwood enumerated 26 June 1860, John, 37, was a farmer, Martha L. was 31. They had a farm that was valued at $2000 and their personal estate was valued at $200. Their son Henry, 10, was living with them.5

They had real estate valued at $2500 and their personal estate value was $1630. Their son, Henry, 20, and wife Emma, 19, were married a few days earlier and living with them but the enumerator did not indicate that they were married.6
