Unmarried, had an adopted daughter Violet (Hickory) Pelky. Miss Cilley owned the store at Plymouth Notch, Vermont where Calvin Coolidge was born. His father owned the store before Cilley owned it. Coolidge became President in 1923 and learned of it by the telephone in Cilley's store. Violet Hickory received the first dollar spent by Coolidge after becoming President. A miracle in Vermont - Cal. Coolidge left a dollar tip.
The following information was taken from a brochure entitled "Historic Coolidge Birthplace - Plymouth, Vermont."
Calvin Coolidge, 30th President of the United States, was born in the building later known as Florence Cilley's Store, on July 4th, 1872. This historical building was purchased by Herman and Violet Pelky in 1945. Through their efforts it has been restored and the furnishings are the same as they were on that famous night of August 3, 1923 when Calvin Coolidge became President of the United States.
Col. and Mrs. John Coolidge lived in these two rooms in back of the Country Store when they were first married. One room was used as a living room and the other the bedroom in which President Coolidge was born.
Miss Florence Cilley bought the property of Col. John Coolidge and moved here in 1912. She operated it until 1945.
Mrs. Pelky has lived in this building since she was three years old.
As you go upstairs, through a bedroom, you enter the large room over the store and post-office where President Coolidge had his Summer White House on his visits to Plymouth in 1924. There were five tables made for this occasion and they are all in place.
Downstairs is the Coolidge Store and Post-office operated by the Coolidges. The old scales, cash register, cheese box. Also on the wall is the telephone used by President Coolidge after he received the news of President Hardings death, to call Washington, on the night of August 3, 1923 to ask if his father, as Notary Public, could administer the oath of office to him as President of the United States.
Beside the telephone is the old spice cabinet with its 30 hand made spice drawers, and it is put together with hand made nails. Also on the wall are the old kerosene lamps.
The kerosene pump, with a wooden tank in the cellar from which was pumped a gallon at a time, and on the top shelves you will see the measures used for this purpose, along with numerous jugs and crocks which have been used in this building for a great many years.
The flour sugar and corn meal bins are in the back of the store from which was weighed out, in paper bags. These were weighed on the large scales on the counter. Also beside these bins is the coffee grinder made in 1873.
Of great interest are the store counters which are made of birdseye maple and cherry, and were put in here by Father Coolidge in 1889. The shelving and the drawers in which merchandise was kept are the same and every-thing is in the same place.4
