Joseph Longfellow Cilley was born on 27 October 1803 at Nottingham, Rockingham, New Hampshire.1 He was the son of Major Jacob Cilley and Harriet Poor.1 He married Lavinia Bayley Kelley, daughter of John Kelley and Susan Hilton, on 22 November 1837.1 He died on 18 August 1868 at age 64.1
