Jonathan Cilley was born on 5 January 1791 at Nottingham, Rockingham, New Hampshire.2,1 He was the son of Major Jonathan Cilley and Dorcas Butler.1 He married Sarah Lee, daughter of Rensalaer Lee and Sarah Heisted, on 24 October 1830.1 He died on 29 December 1874 at age 83.1

Jonathan Cilley and Sarah Lee appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of 8th ward, Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, enumerated 19 July 1850.3
Moved west with his father in 1804, and engaged in agricultural pursuits until 21 years of age. Studied law. Took an active part in politics, and was an ardent Jackson Democrat. Was a State Senator in Ohio, an Elector for President Martin Van Buren, and Judge of Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas in Cincinnati; retired in 1840, and in 1855 removed to Glendale, OH. He was an indulgent father, "of high moral character, smooth culture, one of the old school gentleman."1
