Gen. H. B. Cilley, Former Adjutant General of the State Dies at Manchester
Gen. Harry B. Cilley, well know in this city where he had been a frequent visitor and also well known as a summer resident of New Castle and Kittery died yesterday in a Manchester Hospital. He was 69 years old. Gen. Cilley was prominent in New Hampshire National Guard circles for many years.
He was born in Manchester and at the age of eight he went to Europe where he attended schools of Germany and Switzerland. When he returned, he entered St. Paul's School in Concord and subsequently attended the Cambridge (Mass.) High School and Harvard Law School.
He returned to Manchester in 1862, taking active interest in city government and serving as Representative from Ward 3 in the General Court. In recent years he ahd served in the lower house from Ward 1, Manchester, and was a member of the last constitutional convention.
Gen. Cilley was State liquor agent under Gov. Bachelder, and in 1891 went to Washington as Secretary to the auditor of the Treasury during the Harrison Administration. In the same year he was commisioned a first lieutenant and adjutant in the District of Columbia National Guard and was later promoted to captain and adjutant of the 2nd Regiment, D. C. N. G.
On his return to Manchester he again became active in New Hampshire National Guard circles and was eventually named adjutant general of the state, with which title he retired.
He was a member of all the Masonic bodies, including Washington Lodge, Trinity Commandery, Knights Templar...
